Hey everyone!

Happy Friday to you all. :)


Was reading through HouDe's tea blog and they posted the album linked above. After seeing the leaves used in Puerh...I have a very "blonde" question. Is puerh made from the same species of tea as all others? I realize tea shrubs will grow into trees if not pruned...so is that what we're seeing in the album linked above? Just curious.

Either way, the album is very interesting and the close-ups are very detailed.

yup, as far as i know puerh, oolongs, greens, whites, etc. all come from camellia sinensis. there are subvarieties, but i don't know the details of how they're classified. differences between teas are the result of region, age of tree, and a billion other variables.

I mildly remember reading somewhere that the tea trees of Yunnan are Assamica broad leaf type but I can't find any good references quickly.

Certainly the size shouldn't be any indicator, if you've ever had Fo Shou (Buddha Hands) Oolong tea you will know what I mean ...

I'd be very intersted to find out what really goes into Pu-erh cakes... wouldn't we all?

I just got some Fo Shou from Hou De a few weeks ago and posted a review to this journal. I do know what you mean.

That's an awesome oolong too. :)

Yes, they are the same plant, although there are sub-varieties, such as shrub vs arbor. In Chinese it is 喬木(arbor) and 灌木(shrub). Generally people seem to think that for puerh, arbor trees are better, and broad leaf is better than small leaf. The shrubs are usually farmed while the arbors are wild -- they are hard to pick so farms tend to grow the shrubs.
