2005 6FTM Ban Zhang  


This tea was given to me by a friend. I believe it was purchased through YSLLC, but seems to be no longer available. I'm sure you could track one down if you wanted to.



Brewing method:
approximately 4g (I don't have a scale) in a 120ml gaiwan. Mountain Spring water 10seconds off of a boil.
15s rinse, 30s rest, 12s, 10s, 15s, 25s, 35s, gave up.


Dry appearance:
tightly compressed, but easy to pry off leaves in a plane. Mixed grade throughout with some silver buds.

Dry aroma: fruity and floral.


1st: grassy and floral, and slightly nutty aroma. Pale straw color. Taste of bamboo, floral, hint of acid, bitter finish. No camphor or sweetness. Reminds me of green tea like a long jing.

2nd: bright acidity, sesame seed, grass, bitter and nutty aftertaste

3rd: more floral, less bitter, sour/acidity, citrus, some astringency.

4th: dry and floral

later brews: I gave up fairly soon. It seemed to be running out of juice and just heading down the floral path.



Overall:
This came across as a mild drink-now type of tea. Unfortunately, it is not something that I want to drink a lot of right now. It has nothing offensive, and would be a great tea for someone who finds young sheng to be too tough. It has some very nice floral and acidic flavors, just not my preference. I like a tea with some camphor and hints of sweetness. It also seemed to not have much cha qi -- no real strength.

Aging potential: I doubt it. But what do I know.

I had a different experience with this tea. I used a stronger ratio and similar steep times, managing 10+ good brews that featured heavy aromatic cedar notes, strong florals, and lasting bitterness. I do remember this tea being weak on qi, though.

Makes me want to revisit this tea.

How does it compare to the Xizhihao Lao Banzhang?

I haven't tried this, but it sounds vaguely familiar -- the Xizhihao also tastes like green tea, except the cha qi is very strong. It knocks you out, whereas here it seems to be merely mellow. That's probably the biggest difference?

Hmmm... now I might need to revisit both with that idea in mind...
